📅 A second life for a ThinkPad

💰 Price points and overall value
| Reference | Price and currency | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Historical starting price of the Lenovo range | $509 USD | 2013 launch reference provided by LA CLÉ INFORMATIQUE; not necessarily the exact configuration of this computer. Amount in US dollars, without conversion to CAD. |
| Former refurbished Canadian listing | $449 CAD | Former E531 Core i3, 8 GB, and 120 GB SSD offer, listed as out of stock, according to the store's search. Different configuration and not proof of the current market price. |
| Our bundle | $100 CAD | Core i5-3230M, 8 GB, 128 GB SSD, Windows 11 Home, programs, functional battery, charger, and 30-day hardware warranty. |
Historical references provided by LA CLÉ INFORMATIQUE on October 30, 2026, and not a real-time price verification. They are neither a pre-discount price for this item nor a guaranteed assessment of its current market value. Compare the RAM, SSD, battery, accessories, and warranty.
At $100 CAD, the SSD, 8 GB of memory, included charger, and functional battery are the concrete elements of this affordable solution for everyday computing needs.
💻 A laptop for the essentials, without a major expense
Sit down at the table, plug in the charger, and access your documents, emails, and writing tools on a 15.6-inch screen. The Core i5-3230M and 8 GB of memory provide a foundation for everyday office work, depending on file size and the software used.
The 128 GB SSD promotes system responsiveness compared to a mechanical hard drive, without promising a specific boot time. For a large collection of photos or videos, use an external drive or a suitable cloud storage solution.
Its functional battery, with approximately 1 hour observed by the store, allows for short trips away from an outlet. For a long session, use the included charger. The HDMI output and Bluetooth add possibilities for compatible peripherals.
The ThinkPad keyboard with a dedicated numeric keypad makes entering budgets and spreadsheets easier. The UltraNav system combines a multi-touch touchpad and the red TrackPoint, allowing you to move the pointer according to your habits. The anti-glare matte HD screen helps reduce reflections from the environment.
📊 Processor comparison — PassMark
| Processor | Generation / launch | Cores / threads | Frequency | PassMark CPU Mark | Usage reference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intel Celeron N4000 | 2017 | 2 cores / 2 threads | 1.10 to 2.60 GHz | 1,434 | Entry-level mobile |
| ⭐ Intel Core i5-3230M | 3rd generation / 2013 | 2 cores / 4 threads | 2.60 to 3.20 GHz | 2,569 | Processor of this laptop |
Multicore performance — CPU Mark
Intel Core i5-3230M: 2,569
Intel Celeron N4000: 1,434
Core i5 advantage in this multicore score: approximately 79%.
Single-thread performance — Single Thread
Intel Core i5-3230M: 1,571
Intel Celeron N4000: 1,037
Core i5 advantage in this single-thread score: approximately 51%.
Average PassMark / CPUbenchmark.net scores provided by LA CLÉ INFORMATIQUE, recorded on October 30, 2026. Each chart uses its own scale starting from zero; the bars are proportional to the scores within the chart. These are not the results of a test of this item; they do not measure the SSD or graphics performance and do not guarantee a specific speed in every software. Scores vary depending on submissions and software versions.
💡 Understanding the comparison
The Core i5-3230M has Hyper-Threading and can process 4 threads, compared to 2 for the N4000. It has an advantage in the provided scores, useful as a reference for office work, documents, and compatible light multitasking. This does not mean that all software will be 79% faster.
A higher maximum frequency is not enough to determine overall performance. According to the specifications provided by the store, the Core i5 has 3 MB of cache and a nominal TDP of 35 W, compared to 4 MB and 6 W for the N4000. TDP is not a measure of the total power consumption of these computers.
✅ What it can do
- Writing, everyday spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Emails, web browsing, and reading PDFs.
- Video calls with a compatible application.
- Playing compatible media and using suitable DVD discs.
- Connecting to an HDMI screen and compatible Bluetooth accessories.
❌ Its limitations
- Demanding recent games, virtual reality, and heavy 3D rendering.
- Professional 4K editing and software requiring a recent platform.
- Large local archives on the 128 GB SSD alone.
- Long sessions on battery without access to an outlet.
Performance varies depending on the applications, files, and the number of open tasks.
👥 Who is it for?
For a student with standard needs, a writing station, light administrative management, or a second computer at home. Before purchasing for specific software, check its hardware requirements and compatibility with the installed system.
🎮 Games: stick to light usage
The Core i5-3230M features an Intel HD Graphics 4000 circuit. Some E531 variants also have an NVIDIA card; no dedicated card is announced for this model without confirmation. No FPS results are provided.
✅ Recommended
Card games, puzzles, and low-demand 2D games, depending on their requirements.
⚠️ Check
Older games and light emulation: version, drivers, and settings may affect compatibility.

💡 Technician's note: tool-less external replacement
On this Lenovo ThinkPad E531, the battery is replaced without opening the case. Completely shut down the computer and unplug the charger, then slide the two security latches under the chassis to release the battery. Insert the compatible battery and check that the latches hold it correctly before reconnecting the charger.
This accessibility is a strong point for maintaining this robust laptop offered at $100 and planning a future replacement if needed. No tool is necessary for this operation.
The current battery is included; a new replacement battery is not. Purchase and installation of a replacement at the customer's discretion and expense. A new battery does not guarantee the return of a new device's battery life; it depends on the chosen part and usage.
